How to Plan Meals for The Cottage

It's one of those things. Everyone loves to rent a cottage, spend time outdoors, swim in the lake and make memories with friends and family, BUT there is a lot that has to happen behind the scenes to pull that off! Just keeping the gang fed is a monumental task, and can quickly become a burden on anyone who has to cook for the entire week, or weekend away. Over the years of hosting many parties and events at our cottage, I have learned a few tricks so that when we are away I can enjoy myself and relax as well.

To manage the issue of feeding a large group of people over an extended period of time I have learned that it is best to schedule meals and divy up the cooking. I have also found that it is important to pace your days when it comes to food.

To start. A week before we go to the cottage I send all of our guests a meal schedule. Depending on the size of the crowd, and the length of their stay, I request they bring food for at least one dinner and one brunch style meal. I request that they bring enough food for everyone.  I also make sure we do not duplicate meals by posting the weekly menu for all guests to review. This also helps with food restrictions and allergies.

In terms of daily planning. Usually I plan a mid-morning breakfast/brunch, an afternoon snack & an early evening dinner. I find that if you have the traditional 3 meals per day plus all of the snacks and drinks, it is just too much food and too much effort. Just my opinion. Remember everyone is there to relax and that includes Mom!

Bon a petite!
